Nothing ruins a fun trail ride like your ATV getting stuck in a ditch. Once your quad has wedged its way in, getting it out can be a real trial. The good news is by following this step by step guide from Big Delta Honda, you should be back to riding in no time at all.

1. Use a Winch

Getting your ATV out of the muck is a thousand times easier if you have a winch. Simply attach one end to the front or back of your ATV and the other end to another vehicle, and it should be  out in no time. If you’re riding alone or otherwise don’t expect to have another vehicle on hand to help tow your ATV out, you can pack a “come-along”, which is a small hand-powered winch. Just don’t forget to pack the tow straps!

2. Create Your Own Anchor

Even if your winch isn’t a come-along and you don’t have a vehicle on hand to help pull your ATV out, that doesn’t mean that there’s nothing you can do. Find a large stationary object like a stump or large tree and use it as an anchor. If there are no suitable anchors nearby, use a set of ice-climbing anchors or a small steel rod with an eye bolt.

3. Bring a Shovel

If the above strategies aren’t viable for whatever reason, another thing that you can try is to dig your tires out using a collapsible shovel. Move the dirt around until your vehicle has enough traction to escape.

4. Tilt Your ATV Back and Forth

Another strategy that you can employ to help get your ATV unstuck is to rock your ATV back and forth using your body weight. By leaning into the motion, you should be able to inch your quad forward enough that its wheels can find purchase.
