Now that spring is here, your lawn is starting to grow again. It won’t be long until it’s time to dust off your lawn mower and give your grass a trim. However, an unprepared lawn can result in damage to both your lawn and your mower. Follow these steps from Big Delta Powersports to get your lawn ready for your lawn mower.

Clear Debris From Your Lawn

Debris tends to collect on a lawn during the winter months. The last thing you want is for these debris to get caught in your lawn mower’s undercarriage, so clear them away as soon as possible. Removing debris will also make it easier for your lawn to absorb any fertilizer that you choose to put down.

Nourish Your Lawn

Winter cold can be hard on your grass, so many people use products like fertilizer, weedkiller, and insecticides to help out their lawns and encourage growth. However, it’s usually best to wait until after your first mowing to use these products. If you’re trying to fix bald patches by planting new grass seeds, avoid cutting the new grass until it's at least two inches high or the same height as the rest of your lawn.

Prepare Your Mower

Don’t forget to prep your mower itself! Remove any stray debris from the undercarriage and sharpen the blade if necessary, then make sure that the air filters and spark plugs don’t need to be replaced. Finally, check the oil. If something looks wrong and you’re not sure how to fix it, don’t hesitate to schedule a service appointment.

Cut Your Lawn

When the time comes to finally give your lawn its first mowing of the year, set your mower in the sun for about an hour beforehand to let it warm up. Your aim for a first cutting should be to remove about ⅓ of the overall grass blade.
